OLD DOMINION University's Samantha Salvia and Norfolk State's James Roe have been selected by the Portsmouth Sports Club as the state's outstanding college athletes for 1995.
They will be honored at the 50th annual Sports Club Jamboree, scheduled on Wednesday, March 6 at the Holiday Inn-Portside. Featured speaker will be Donnie Shell, director of player relations for the Carolina Panthers in the NFL.
Salvia, ODU's first Rhodes Scholar, was a third-team All-American in field hockey after gaining All-CAA honors. She ranked fourth nationally in assists with 22.
A three-time Academic All-American with a 4.0 GPA in engineering, Salvia sparked ODU to a 16-9 record and a No. 6 national ranking.
A senior from Norristown, Pa., Salvia was a four-year player for the Monarchs.
Roe, winner of the Eddie Robinson Award, set 14 records at Norfolk State for pass catching. Three were NCAA Division II records.
Roe caught a pass in every game in which he played at Norfolk State - 41.
His Division II records included 4,468 in receiving yardage for his career, 15 consecutive games with a touchdown catch and 27 career games with a scoring reception.
A 6-1, 192-pound senior, Roe is from Richmond.
The outstanding college coach award will go to Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer.
The Abe Goldblatt Memorial Award, to the outstanding high school coach in the area, will be presented to Churchland baseball coach Carl Rhodes.
Jamboree chairman Jimmy Williams said a heavy advance sale of tickets indicates the possibility of a sellout. Tickets are $40.
``I would advise people to purchase their tickets early,'' said Williams. ``There may not be any tickets available at the door on the night of the Jamboree.'' MEMO: Tickets may be purchased by calling 399-6525.
