Lucien Berry McDonald, 80, of the 400 block of Goodspeed Road, died Feb. 7, 1996.
Rear Adm. McDonald served 33 years in the U.S. Navy before joining the Commonwealth of Virginia as regional director of the Hampton Roads Intrastate Air Quality Control Region. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1938, from George Washington University in 1956 with a Masters Degree in Business. He also graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1960. During World War II and the Korean War, Adm. McDonald served in the Submarine Service. During the height of action in Vietnam, Adm. McDonald commanded the Military Sea Transport Service in the Far East, for which he received the Distinguished Service Medal. Among other medals are the Navy Unit Citation, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. On his last tour, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Management on the Staff of the Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet with Headquarters in Norfolk.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Grimshaw McDonald; two daughters, Jessica McDonald Howell of Winston Salem, N.C., and Elizabeth McDonald Beverly of Virginia Beach; one son, Lucien Berry McDonald Jr. of Mclean, Va.; three brothers, Col. Robert Clarence McDonald Jr. of Sierra Vista, Ariz., James Gordon McDonald of San Clemente, Calif., and Henry Stanton McDonald of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.
There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach by Dr. Scottie Griffin. Burial will be at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
