A 4-year-old boy who fell through ice Wednesday and spent as long as five minutes in and under the frigid water was in critical condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The boy was one of three children to fall through ice Wednesday in two separate incidents. In the Princess Anne Hills area, two children fell through ice and were quickly rescued by neighbors. They didn't require medical treatment, rescue officials said.
The 4-year-old boy apparently stepped off a dock in the 2900 block of Breezy Road and fell through the ice, according to rescue director Bruce Edwards.
The boy was breathing when he was taken by ambulance to Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Later, the boy, whose name wasn't released at his parents' request, was transferred to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. by CNB
