INCREASED WATER LOAD FOR CHESAPEAKE

The Sunday Business Section (Jan. 21) carried a great article on YUPO Corp. and it's expansion into the United States. This article discussed the $100 million-dollar-construction investment, the initial hiring of 100 people and its possible expansion in the future. The color pictures showing the manufacturing process and the details on the possible environmental concerns are covered perfectly!

But the real concern of residents of Chesapeake is not the additional income or employment, although these issues are real and need to be addressed. The real concern in Chesapeake is, Are we going to get good water?

The article compares the wastewater-discharge amount (25,000 gallons per day) for this company to NAS Oceana and Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. The article further states the Hampton Roads Sanitation District considers a wastewater discharge of 25,000 gallons per day to be that of a ``significant industrial user.'' Does this mean the company is going to use 50,000 gallons of drinking water per day?

For at least four months of the year, the residents of Chesapeake can't get good, clean (not salty) drinking water; but we still have to pay for it the entire year (and even get a rate increase)! With YUPO's demand on the Chesapeake water system, are we now going to be able to drink the water for only half of the year?

Is there something wrong with this picture?
