JOHN H. PATTERSON

John Henry Patterson, 76, of the 5600 block of Poplar Hall Drive, died Feb. 8, 1996.

Mr. Patterson was born in Whitakers, N.C., near Rocky Mount, on March 4, 1919. He was a product of the union between Pauline V. Nelson Patterson and John Henry Patterson. John had an older brother, George and a younger brother, Theodore.

John attended Hampton University and resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. In Brooklyn, he met and married Margaret Jordan in 1942. Three children were born of this union. He worked in New York until his retirement as an audiovisual technician, from the New York City Board of Education in December 1978. John also taught at Pace University's College Prep Outreach Program.

After moving to Norfolk, Mr. Patterson worked with the Norfolk School System for six years in the Audiovisual Department and retired for a second time. As a bridge enthusiast, he also served as bridge director for The Tidewater Bridge Unit and the ABA (American Bridge Association).

Some of you knew John as a computer whiz. He used his technical skills in his after-retirement career as an income tax preparer and a computer trainer. In addition he performed a civic function as a notary public. In his immediate community, Mr. Patterson became a member of the Norfolk Democratic Committee and the Poplar Hall Civic League. John belonged to Grace Episcopal Church and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. As a Mason, he also belonged to the Excelsior Lodge in Norfolk.

John Henry Patterson is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Joan Patterson Garcia of Brooklyn; son, John H. Patterson III of Bronx, N.Y.; grandson, John H. Patterson IV of Long Beach, N.Y.; brother, George G. Patterson of Jamaica, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in Grace Episcopal Church by Father Harold J. Cobb. Riddick Funeral Service is in charge.
