William H. ``Hardee'' Wheeley, 75, of the 200 block of George Washington Highway North, a retired Shipfitter First Class, died Feb. 5, 1996, in a Portsmouth Hospital.
Mr. Wheeley was a native of Orange County, N.C., and a resident of Tidewater for most of his life. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, and he retired in 1971 from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, shop 11, after 31 years combined government service. Mr. Wheeley more recently retired from the City of Chesapeake as a bridge tender on the Gilmerton Bridge after 17 years employment. Mr. Wheeley was a member of Tidewater Western Riders and a former member of the Knights of Pythias.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Wheeley of Chesapeake; a son, William Howard Wheeley and his wife, Pamela Haycox Wheeley, of Norfolk; two granddaughters, Anne Rachel Wheeley Pearce and Jennifer Leigh Wheeley Palmer; and 1 great-granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Palmer.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Selden Chapel of Christ and St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. James Sell. Entombment will be in the Church's Columbarium. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ and St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Stephens Ministries. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
