The Coast Guard recognized three of its own - Seaman Apprentice John D. Gaulin, Petty Officer 3rd Class Kenyon D. Young and Seaman John E. Beedy for their roles in rescuing Fireman Joshua Fitzjerald on Jan. 17 at the Elizabeth City base.
In ceremonies Jan. 26, Young was awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal while Gaulin and Beedy received letters of commendation.
Young works at the Aviation Technical Training Center. Gaulin works for the Support Center.
Fitzjerald passed out during an extended underwater swim at the base pool and Young jumped in to save him. Young, an aviation electrician's mate, was aided by Beedy who cleared Fitzjerald's airway and assisted in rescue breathing. Gaulin, the lifeguard on duty, helped pull Fitzjerald from the water.
