TWO ROBBERY SUSPECTS

Two Norfolk men, arrested Sunday in connection with a burglary in North Carolina last week, are suspects in the theft of more than $20,000 in a variety of items, police spokesman Larry Hill said Monday.

Police said Johnathan L. Shanks, 22, and Michael Dibella, 19, were arrested after a burglary victim reported that he spotted his stolen canoe in a yard on Carlton Street.

Hill said Catharina Bryant was driving in the 8000 block of Carlton St. Sunday morning when he saw two men painting a canoe. Bryant told police the canoe looked like one stolen in Perquimans County, N.C., Feb. 7.

Police determined the canoe did belong to Bryant, Hill said. They then secured warrants to search several locations - including the homes of both suspects and a residence in 5000 block of Woolsley St.

Hill said investigators found items valued at more than $20,000. The stolen goods included a go-cart, boat and utility trailers, weed whackers, microwave ovens, air compressors, stereos, TV sets, dishes and tools, Hill said.

Shanks, of the 8000 block of Carlton St. and Dibella, of the 3400 block of Pleasant Ave., face six charges of felonious burglary and larceny in North Carolina. Norfolk police charged each with four counts of grand larceny, Hill said.

They waived extradition to North Carolina Monday, Hill said, and were being held in the Norfolk City Jail. Other charges are pending.
