Citizens are being asked to meet 8 p.m. tonight at churches across Hampton Roads to talk about ways to end violence and to promote living life to its fullest.
The night of ``town meetings'' was called by leaders of Citizens for S.A.V.E. - Stopping Acts of Violence with Education - an organization started by Norfolk businessman Thomas Taylor. He was inspired by the call for community action delivered during the Million Man March.
Taylor said he wants participants to go away having made a commitment to volunteer ``one hour a week, or 52 hours a year,'' into something that will help ``stem the tide of violence or promote traditional family values.''
Taylor, a branch manager of Ford Motor Credit, said he and his co-workers have adopted students at Crestwood Intermediate School and tutor them in math, english and computer skills.
The Rev. Reginald Early, pastor of Martin Luther King Methodist, stressed that his church's panel program was designed to go beyond talk.
The purpose, he said, is ``to come out empowered to go out in the community and do what we can to stop the violence.''
Taylor and other board members have been contacting churches throughout the region to host sessions with citizens.
``There is a real interest in having religious leaders help us with this,'' Taylor said.
