PETA'S ``RADICAL AGENDA'' NOT WANTED

According to staff writer Bob Hutchinson's ``Animal-rights activists taking aim at fishing'' (Sports, Feb. 4) regarding the proposed relocation to Norfolk of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) national headquarters, the latest agenda of this group is to eliminate both sport and commercial fishing.

Beyond PETA's well-known anti-hunting and anti-fishing posture is a not-too-well-concealed agenda to abolish the consumption of all meat products as well as the wearing of all leather goods. Add to this Mr. Hutchinson's assertion of ``close ties to the Animal Liberation Front, an underground terrorist group,'' and we have the beginnings of a truly frightening scenario.

Our commonwealth has a well-documented and respected outdoor heritage, and those who enjoy our marvelous hunting and fishing opportunities are fervent in their efforts to preserve this legacy for future generations.

We do not need extremist, divisive organizations in Hampton Roads. The goal and mission of PETA go far beyond abolishing hunting and fishing. Recent letters to the editor concerning the boycotting of the Barnum and Bailey Circus is another example of how PETA seeks to impose its radical agenda on children and others.

Regarding economic development: Will a prospective business that is considering Hampton Roads as a home be impressed upon learning that PETA is headquartered here? I think not.
