VAN J. VORHEES SR.

Van J. Voorhees Sr., 50, of the 3600 block of Sea Gull Road, died Feb. 15, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital due to a complication of diabetes.

Mr. Voorhees was born 50 years ago in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and was on the St. Nicholas Parish Council. Mr. Voorhees was very involved with the YMCA; he served as past president of Virginia Beach YMCA. He umpired and coached many youth throughout his life. He will be missed and loved by many.

Mr. Voorhees is survived by Carol Fowler Voorhees, his beloved wife of 30 years; two daughters, Carla Voorhees of Winter Park, Fla., Marni Voorhees of Richmond, Va.; five sons, Capt. Jay and his wife, Joyce Voorhees of Killen, Texas, Lt. Geof and his wife, Mary Voorhees of Colorado Springs, Colo., John Voorhees, Joseph Voorhees and David Voorhees, all of Virginia Beach; his parents, Roy Dale and Mary P. Voorhees of Ames, Iowa; two sisters, Kristen, and her husband Rod McRae of Chicago, Gretchen Voorhees of Ft. Worth, Texas; and two brothers, Rox and his wife, Christa Voorhees of Denver Colo., Brett and his wife, Jenni Voorhees of Des Moines, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Hailey Voorhees and Jake Voorhees.

A funeral Mass will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. Father James Noto will preside over the service at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the church Sunday, from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the Mass of the Ressurection; in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or to Mary Ellen Cox Building Fund, 644 N. Lynnhaven Road, Virginia Beach, 23452. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, is in charge.
