SELF-INFLICTED WOUND

I read with disbelief and outrage that the Republican Party is considering finding a procedure to limit the upcoming Republican primary to ballots only to citizens of the commonwealth who declare themselves Republican (Guy Friddell's column, Jan. 31).

I am an independent voter. I usually vote for the candidate most deserving of elected office (if one is available) regardless of party affiliation. Now, as I understand existing election laws, primaries in Virginia are open to voters of any political party, but you are limited to voting in one primary only, Republican or Democrat (if they choose to hold one). The GOP proposal is an absolute insult to my intelligence as well as an undisguised stab in the back to our/their sitting senator, John W. Warner.

If this proposal is adopted, I, for one, and possibly many like me, would be very hesitant to vote for a Republican candidate again. The Republican Party should stop shooting itself in the foot!
