Ruth Mildred Gunter, 86, died Feb. 16, 1996, in Norfolk.
She was a former resident of Portsmouth and a retired operator supervisor for C & P Telephone Company. She was born in Ahoskie, N.C., and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Portsmouth. She was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She is survived by three nieces, Patti Ferebee of Portsmouth, Linda Dunlow of Chesapeake, Suzan Dardin Smith of Virginia Beach; and five nephews, Joseph D. Dardin of Chesapeake, Elmo G. Jernigan of Chesapeake, William Ferebee of Keen, N.Y., Vernon Ferebee of Portsmouth, James Hooper of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Fred Braswell in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association or to a charity of choice.
