The three-team race between Tallwood, Cox and First Colonial materialized quickly Friday before bad weather brought an early halt to the Beach District wrestling tournament at Ocean Lakes.
Action was scheduled to be completed through the semifinals, but the snowstorm prompted tournament officials to shut things down after the 189-pound quarterfinals.
Wrestling will resume in the 215-pound class today at 11 a.m. and will be spread over three mats instead of two. The rest of Saturday's schedule is expected to remain unchanged: consolation quarterfinals, noon; consolation semifinals, 1:30 p.m.; fifth-place matches, 3 p.m.; third-place matches, 3:45 p.m.; finals, 7 p.m.
Regular-season champion Tallwood, defending tournament champion Cox and First Colonial, the district's top three teams during the regular season, each have nine wrestlers in the semifinals. Princess Anne and Ocean Lakes are next with six each; Kellam has five.
Friday's action went mostly according to form. The top two seeds in each weight class advanced, and only three third- or fourth-seeds fell. At 112, Bayside's Richie Amacio, who had won just two of nine district bouts, upended third-seeded Nick Franzitta of Cox, 11-6. First Colonial's Sokon Om took out No. 4 Shawn Lemke of Kempsville, 5-3, at 145, and Ocean Lakes Chris Pugh pinned fourth-seeded James Stolle of Green Run at 4:43 in a 189-pound bout. by CNB
