INDIAN RIVER FAVORED TO WIN TOURNAMENT

Some of the oldest of area records stand in the Southeastern District boys basketball tournament.

As the eight district teams prepare for the 29th annual tourney this week, the task of rewriting the record book appears as unlikely as ever.

It has been 16 years since a team scored over the century mark in a tournament game. Only twice has it ever happened.

Norcom set the record with 103 points in a game against Western Branch in 1969. Indian River equaled it against Cradock in 1980.

The single-game scoring record has stood for 21 years. Larry Orton pitched in 41 points for Norcom against Indian River in 1975.

The three-game individual record of 77 points is shared by Norcom's Barry Wright (1977) and Indian River's Ralph Bullock (1972).

The highest scoring team for three games was the 1979 Indian River squad, which racked up 254 points.

Here's the other district tournament records:

INDIVIDUAL:

(One game)

Most field goals - Larry Orton, Norcom (1975), 17

Most rebounds - Allen Davenport, Norcom (1978), 22

Most assists - Pat Creecy, Indian River (1981), 11

(Three games)

Most field goals - Ralph Bullock, Indian River (1972), 31

Most rebounds - Grady Brown, Indian River (1979), 45

Most assists - Pat Creecy, Indian River (1981), 11

TEAM:

(One game)

Most field goals - Norcom (1969), 43

Most rebounds - Wilson (1981), 63

(Three games)

Most field goals - Indian River (1979), 99

Most rebounds - Crestwood (1969), 142

This will be the last Southeastern tournament for the three Portsmouth schools. Wilson, Norcom and Churchland move into the Eastern District in September.

Churchland is the defending champion, winning last year for the first time since 1968.

But regular-season champion Indian River, the titlist two years ago on a shot at the buzzer in the championship game and a 72-54 loser in the final last year, is a solid favorite. by CNB
