STATE DUCKPIN TOURNAMENT COMING TO PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth will host the 65th annual Virginia State Duckpin Tournament.

Competition will be held at Victory Lanes on the four weekends in March with action starting on March 2. Hope Shull will serve as tournament director.

Area bowlers won four state championships last year. Tom Gregory, who will be competing on his home lanes, and A.C. Paul shared the 1995 men's singles title with handicap sets of 528. Norfolk's Oneil Wynne and George Smith, who has moved out of the area, paired for the men's double crown with 1,021. Virginia Beach's Linda Gaines and Dot Smith of Norfolk won women's doubles with 982.

The Rabels of Norfolk captured the team championship with 1,765.

Entry forms are available at duckpin centers but walk-in entries will be accepted. There will be one prize for every 10 entries in a division and guaranteed prizes to champions.

After a week's delay by the ice and snow, the 39th annual Tidewater Women's Bowling Association Championship is under way. The 43rd annual Norfolk Bowling Association tourney opened as scheduled on Feb. 10.

The TWBA officials were able to reschedule their three-weekend competition into two weeks and only lost six teams in the process.

In first-round action, Sharon Kunkle surpassed last year's winning scratch series in Division 1 singles in the TWBA tourney with 684. Dot Dy won last year with 668. Kunkle also is the handicap leader with 729.

In doubles Beth Belko and Fran Sansone pace the scratch division with 1101. Merle Waddell and Teet Cotterell top the handicap division with 1,313. The all-events leaders are Renita Rock (1,695 scratch) and Weeatha Carey (2,024 handicap). Knock-M-Dead heads the teams in both scratch (2,187) and handicap (2,524) categories.

In Division 2, No Name 130, captained by Cheryl Thomson, is the pacesetter in scratch (1,940) and handicap (2,533). Patricia Painter leads scratch singles with 505 and Shirley Malton tops handicap singles with 693. Marva Paige and Brenda Dusin lead scratch doubles with 1,017 and are second in the handicap category behind Shirley Dennis and Evelyn Melia (1,367).

Terri Cook's 1,478 leads Division 2 scratch all-events. Bobbi Lepp heads the handicap division with 1,919.

Columbia 300, composed of Thomas Brown, Reginald Jones, Reuben Turner Jr. and Warren Brooks, is the handicap team leader in the NBA tournament with 2,933.

Eric Carey has grabbed the handicap all-events lead with 2,319. Carey also shares the handicap doubles lead with Rolandus Garner with 1,590. The handicap singles leader is Richard Anderson with 737.

BOWLER OF THE WEEK honors go to Rick Phillips.

Phillips had games of 256, 278 and 277, breaking the old center standard by Jerry Huddleston by a single pin. There were two open frames in Phillips' series, which included 28 strikes.
