A Hampton man died Saturday after his car flew into the air, flipped and hit a tree on Interstate 64, state police said.
The accident occurred about 6:34 p.m. as the vehicle approached the eastbound on-ramp to the interstate at Oyster Point Road.
The car apparently skidded on a patch of ice, crashed into an embankment and became airborne, then hit a tree before landing upside down.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt, a state police spokeswoman said.
No other cars were involved in the accident, and no one else was injured.
The man's identity was being withheld until his relatives could be notified.
The accident closed the ramp to traffic for two hours.
