ELLEN J. BENNER

Ellen Byrd Jordan Benner, of the 4600 block of Player Lane, died in a local hospital on Feb. 16, 1996.

Mrs. Benner was born in Winton, N.C., to Claude E. Jordan Sr. and Martha Lucille Rhodes Jordan. She was a graduate of Maury High School, Norfolk. On Nov. 27, 1947, she married Capt. John Samuel Benner Jr., U.S. Army, at First United Methodist Church of Washington, N.C. They traveled to many posts during his military career including several in the United States and Germany.

Mrs. Benner was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Arlington, Va., the Quarter Masters Wives Club, a volunteer at both Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Arlington Hospital. Both avid bowlers, she and her husband won several trophies. A devoted mother, she enjoyed spending time with her family at the beach. After her husband's death in 1973, she continued to travel extensively overseas.

Survivors include two sons, John S. Benner III of Greeley, Colo., and Stephen Jordan Benner of Virginia Beach; a brother, Claude E. Jordan Jr. of Estes Park, Colo.; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington. Friends may join the family at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to a favorite charity of your choice.
