Capt. David Michael Dudka, retired U.S. Army, 38, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 1996 after a long and courageous battle with AIDS.
He was born in Fort Worth, Texas, but grew up in Alexandria, Va. He attended Tulane School of Architecture and graduated from Washington & Lee University. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1981 and served as an infantry platoon leader and a company commander in this country as well as abroad in Germany and in Panama where he was assigned to counter-terrorism, monitoring military operations during the Panama crisis. Mr. Dudka was a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal for his work as a U.S. Army historian. He retired in 1992 as chief of Military History at Fort Benning, Ga. Following his retirement, Capt. Dudka moved to Richmond where his assemblage of military memorabilia has been recognized as a major private collection.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bette Conners Dudka of Alexandria; his father, Henry W. Dudka and stepmother, Margaret of Henderson, Texas; his sister, Rebecca Dodge of Virginia Beach; a niece; three nephews; and numerous loving friends and supporters.
His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Park and Laurel Street. Interment is in Arlington National Cemetery.
