CIRCUSES IN PERSPECTIVE

If the group that calls itself PETA really believes that there is animal cruelty at Ringling Bros., then it has the right to protest. However, it is inappropriate on elementary-school grounds. By a school spokesperson's own admission (MetroNews, Feb. 10), what students need right now is nondisrupted instruction time in classes. Perhaps a protest at Ringling Bros. sites would have more impact. Or would PETA rather disrupt the students to gain publicity?

Do we really believe that the circus is more serious than, say, the drug problem? Or child abuse? Let's use a little common sense. Let's not bash an institution that has provided much fun and happiness for children throughout the years.

In case I'm accused of being an animal hater, my family and I have had dogs, cats and rabbits for pets, and we have loved them all. And yes, my husband and my 5-year-old son are taking me to the circus this year.
