MAUDE R. GIBSON

Maude Elizabeth Rorrer Gibson, 56, died at home, Feb. 20, 1996.

She was born in Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Va., the daughter of Myrtle Elizabeth Barnett Rorrer of Albemarle County and the late Samuel Adolphus Rorrer. She was a member of Ascension Catholic Church, and was a graduate of Albemarle High School, where she was a member of the marching band. Maude retired in July 1995 from Oceana Naval Air Station after 27 years of service with the federal government. In past years, she was an active member and past president of the Birchwood Civic League. She was also a member of the Band Parent's Association for the Princess Anne High School Marching Cavaliers where she served as fund raising chairperson, devoting many hours of her time to support band activities and frequently served as chaperon on band trips. Maude had many guardian angels during her life, and gave unselfishly to those who needed help. Well-thought of and loved by many, she was a friend to all and she touched many lives.

Besides her mother, Maude is survived by two daughters, Heidi Maria Gibson and her fiance, Jay Hyden, and Deanna Elizabeth Flanagan and her husband, Mark, all of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Frances Rorrer Coffey of Charlottesville, Doris Rorrer Swenson of San Jose, Calif., Phyllis Barnett Garrison of Staunton, Va., and Lucille Barnett Switzer of Covington, Va.; two brothers, Daniel Chapman Rorrer of Standardsville, Va., and Linwood Mason Barnett of Crozet, Va.; special half-brother, Samuel Curtis Rorrer of Patrick Springs, Va.; half-sister, Christel Rorrer Handy of Claudesville, Va.; special cousin, Mary Lou Atkins Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; special aunt, Carrie Barnett Woodson of Crozet, Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other cousins. She was predeceased by five half-brothers and two half-sisters.

A funeral Mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church, 4853 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, by Father James E. Parke at 2 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Ascension Catholic Church from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday. Following the funeral service, the family will receive friends in the Commons of the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lee's Friends, 618 Stockley Gardens, Norfolk, Va. 23507, or to the American Cancer Society, Virginia Beach Unit, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
