LUCILLE S. ASHLEY

Lucille Simpson Ashley, 93, passed away on Feb. 16, 1996, at the Virginia Beach home of her younger son, Roger T. Ashley, where she had resided for the past five years.

Born Oct. 4, 1902, in Schenectady, N.Y., she was the daughter of Ernest Lyle Simpson and Maude Spurlin Simpson. She relocated as a teenager to Ft. Wayne, Ind., and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1923. She married Ensign Charles Linsey Ashley of the U.S. Navy on Sept. 6, 1923, and moved with him to various locations on the west coast and in the middle west during his naval and subsequent career as manger of several meat packaging corporations. Following her husband's World War II recall to Naval service, the family again relocated to Dunedin, Fla., in September of 1950. She was president of her ladies circle in the First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin and served as sponsor of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for several years. Active in civic affairs and the retired officer's association, she spearheaded a fund raising campaign to build the Dunedin Youth Center. She was honored as ``First Lady of Dunedin'' in 1960. Widowed in 1972, she had resided in Virginia Beach since 1988.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Capt. E.L. Simpson Jr. of the U.S. Navy (Ret.), and Orin S. Simpson. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Simpson of Highland Park, N.J.; two sons, Capt. Linsey S. Ashley, U.S. Navy (Ret.), of McLean, Va., and Cmdr. Roger T. Ashley, U.S. Navy (Ret.), of Virginia Beach and Franklin, W.Va.; two grandsons; a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, at 1 p.m. on Feb. 23, 1996. Interment will be at the Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clearwater, Florida Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Lucille Ashley's name.
