NAVAL MUSEUM EVENT: Re-enactor Thomas E. Sledge will present the Civil War from the perspective of black sailors who served in both the Union and Confederate navies, at noon and again at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Living Sea Theater at Nauticus. NORTHWEST RECEIVES AWARD: Naval Security Group Activity Northwest was a state winner in the 1995 Keep Virginia Beautiful Awards program. The base won second place in the ``Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'' government agency category. The award was presented Feb. 13. This is the second year Northwest has entered and won an award in the Keep Virginia Beautiful contest. They won first place last year and were one of six finalists in the Keep America Beautiful competition.
ADOLESCENT STUDY: The Military Family Institute of Marywood College in Scranton, Pa. will conduct an adolescent study at Norfolk Naval Base March 18-23. The study, endorsed by the Department of Defense, seeks information about military youth to better understand their strengths and needs. The results will have an impact on future policy and programming decisions. Those who were chosen to participate in the study should have already received an information packet. JAPAN'S RISE AND FALL: The MacArthur Memorial has a new exhibit tracing Japan's rise and fall as one of the imperial powers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Through the use of artifacts, photographs and documents, ``Empire of the Sun: Japan, 1853-1945,'' will trace the country's progression from feudal society ruled by shoguns and clans to the technological and industrial powerhouse of World War II. The exhibit will be on display through June.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS VOLUNTEERS: Fifty sailors from the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower volunteered Sunday to organize and manage the Virginia Special Olympics basketball tournament. The event, involving 120 athletes, ages 9 years old and up, was held at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach.
BAND AND INSTRUMENTAL CLINIC: The Armed Forces School of Music will host its 40th annual All-Eastern Band and Instrumental Clinic April 24-27. The event, which includes several special appearances by guest performers, the School of Music and area public school students, is free and open to the public. MASTER CHIEF RECEIVES AWARD: A master chief assigned to the Naval School of Health Sciences in Portsmouth received the Navy Achievement Medal in January for rendering timely aid in an automobile accident. Hospital Corpsman Master Chief (Surface Warfare) John Robert Bayerlein and a fellow corpsman who didn't leave his name stopped last summer to assist after an auto accident on the New Jersey turnpike. Bayerlein asks that the petty officer should come forward to receive recognition. Bayerlein can be reached at 398-5047. FAMILY SERVICES
COMMUNICATE BETTER: Navy Family Services Center Little Creek will offer a ``Personal Communication'' course on Wednesday evenings beginning March 6 and running through March 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will learn more effective speaking and listening skills, understanding communication styles and learning conflict resolution skills. CHANGE OF COMMAND:
Rear Adm. Gregory G. Johnson relieves Rear Adm. William J. Fallon as commander of Carrier Group Eight. Johnson's previous assignment was with the Atlantic Fleet commander's staff, where he served as its director of operations, plans and policy. Fallon will become the deputy commander of the Atlantic Fleet.
