DAVID SELBY WANTED: 2-SPORT STATE DOUBLE LIKE IVERSON GOT

Indian River's basketball player David Selby calls himself ``The Prince of Darkness.''

``I'm the prince of all the dark men out there in the world,'' Selby said. ``At least that's what the girls say.''

But since the Braves clinched the Southeastern District title last week, the 5-foot-10 inch point guard says he wants another nickname.

``I want to be called `Baby Bubba Chuck,' '' said Selby, alluding to the nickname of Georgetown guard Allen Iverson. ``I was like a little Allen Iverson last week. Something positive happened in every game. I made things happen. Like Iverson, I took care of things in clutch time.

``Going into the game, I knew that either Jason Capel or I would make a difference. I had a lot of steals, scored some points and dished the ball to my teammates.''

Selby might have to wait to compare himself to Iverson.

But the junior, who averages 13 points a game, did stand out as Indian River won four games in four days.

He had a total of 62 points against Booker T. Washington, Churchland, Wilson and Great Bridge to help Indian River end the regular-season with a 14-game win streak.

Selby had a career-high 28 points with six rebounds, three blocks and two steals against Booker T. Against Churchland, he collected 15 points and 10 rebounds.

In the other games, he set up his teammates on fast breaks and alley-oops.

For his effort, Selby was named the Virginian-Pilot's male athlete of the week.

``David was shooting over 50 percent in all four games,'' Indian River coach Fred Spellman said.

``He ran the floor well and made a lot of good defensive plays. Defenders couldn't keep up.''

But Selby isn't content with just winning the district title.

After being a wide receiver on last fall's state Division 6 championship football team, he expects a state title in basketball.

``That will be a great feeling to win a state championship in both football and basketball in the same year,'' he said. ``I would just love it.

``Plus, I know we are going to produce. We've got unfinished business to take care of. We lost in the playoffs last year. We better win states. This year's team is quicker.''

Iverson led Bethel High to state titles in both basketball and football in the 1992-93 school year.

Maybe Selby and Iverson will share that bond soon. by CNB
