John C. Bowers, 73, of 24 Pineland Road, died Monday, Feb. 19, 1996, at the Hilton Head Hospital.
He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1991 from Jacksonville, where he had resided since 1965. He was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he also received a master's degree in chemical engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Lambda Upsilon honor societies. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1943 to March 1946 in ETO.
His first job was with the University of Florida Citrus Experiment Station in Lake Alfred, Fla., from January 1948 to June 1951. While there he was instrumental in helping develop orange juice concentrate, as well as many other products. He then went to work in chemical by-products for the Union Camp Corporation in Savannah, Ga., from July 1951 to March of 1965, where he developed a number of items, including fragrances for perfumes and soap products as well as other items. His positions at Union Camp included research engineer, superintendent of development, assistant superintendent production terpene and aromatics.
He worked for Union Camp in Jacksonville from April 1965 to July 1986 and held several positions including superintendent manufacturing services, production manager, assistant to vice president and retired as manager of environmental affairs in August 1986 and was an exclusive consultant to Union Camp from August 1986 to December of 1989. He was a member of the American Chemical Society. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Environmental Protection Board in Jacksonville and was a Lions Club member, having been a former president and Zone chairman.
Mr. Bowers is survived by his wife, Estelle Jones Bowers; three sons, Robert J. Bowers of Clifton, Va., John N. Bowers of Louisburg, N.C., Owen Fulghum of Hilton Head Island; three daughters, Sandra B. Fulghum of Hilton Head Island, Patricia Bowers of Clifton, and Fiona Bowers of Louisburg; a sister, Virginia Mae Bowers of South Boston, Va.; three granddaughters, Cheryl and Suzanne Bowers of Clifton and Morgaine Bowers of Louisburg; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at The Island Funeral Home, 4 Cardinal Road, Hilton Head Island. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dean Johnson officiating. Interment will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah. Memorial contributions to the America Cancer Society, P.O.
