Henry Eugene Bernd, 80, of the 140 block of Dogwood Trail, died Wednesday Feb. 21, 1996, at an Elizabeth City hospital.
Mr. Bernd was born in Danbury, Conn., and was a retired occupational therapist for the state of Connecticut. He was a former member of the Southern Shores and the Kitty Hawk Volunteer Fire Departments and was a charter member of Duck Woods Golf and Country Club. Mr. Bernd was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force in the Pacific theater. He was the son of the late Arthur Eugene Bernd and the late Mrs. Ann Sowerby Bernd. Mr. Bernd was the husband of Marie (Polly) Blankenship Bernd of the home.
Besides his wife, Mr. Bernd is survived by three daughters, Barbara Boland of Norfolk, Susan Fogg of Watertown, Mass., and Jean Inglis of Edenton, N.C.; a sister, Carol Buck of St. Augustine, Fla.; a brother, John Bernd of Colington Harbour of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Southern Shores Cemetery by the Rev. Robert Pitsch. The family will receive friends at the Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and suggests that memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 3104 N. Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, 27948, or to the Salvation Army.
