Middle and high school students will have opportunities to surf the Internet, fly foam airplanes and build battery-operated boats during an engineering open house in Old Dominion University's College of Engineering and Technology on Friday and Saturday.
The event is a celebration of National Engineers' Week.
Students from nearly 400 middle and high schools in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina have been invited to the open house Friday to meet with engineering faculty and students and to tour the college's teaching and research facilities, including a robotics laboratory and an operational wind tunnel. Eleven technological companies also will be on hand to demonstrate their products.
On Saturday, students will participate in six design contests, including the Mousetrap Car Race in which a small, handmade car is powered by a mousetrap, and the Electric Boat Contest in which the students construct a model airboat using balsam wood and a battery. They also can solve a puzzle using personal computers in surfing the Internet and make model airplanes from foam meat trays in the Foam Airplane Contest. Old Dominion engineering students will judge the contests.
Trophies and certificates will be awarded.
In addition, a human-powered submarine, a self-propelled robotics car and minicar, all built by Old Dominion engineering students, will be demonstrated. For more information, call the college at 683-3789. ILLUSTRATION: WHEN AND WHERE
