Residents of the Outer Banks who listen to the National Weather Service Radio should have noticed an improvement in the signal strength over the past couple of weeks.
A 40-foot antenna was installed on the Buxton Coast Guard tower at the 430-foot level Feb. 13.
The old antenna was damaged during Hurricane Emily in 1993. The damage resulted in a reduction of signal strength. The new directional antenna was aimed north and south along the Outer Banks. Residents as far north as Coinjock have reported a clear, strong signal.
The reliability of the radio transmitter has been greatly improved by the addition of an uninterrupted power supply. In the past, the transmitted power frequently dropped from 1,000 watts to 100 watts during power outages and power interruptions.
The Weather Radio broadcasts weather information 24 hours a day on a frequency of 162,475 mhz. by CNB
