THOMAS E. TALLEY

Bishop Thomas E. Talley, of the 2700 block of Magnolia St., transisitioned from this earth to reward on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 1996.

He was a native of Norlina, N.C., and was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 33 years of service. He was very active in many local, civic, religious, and community affairs. He has served on the Portsmouth School Board, as president of Kirk-Cone Rehabilitation Center, and as president of the Interdenominational Ministers Forum. He has served as pastor of Gospel Light United Holy Church in Newport News for 49 years and pastor of Twine's Memorial Holy Temple in Portsmouth for 32 years. He was elected president of the United Holy Church of America Inc., 16427, in 1992 and was an incumbent nominee for the 1996 election. The United Holy Church of America, founded in 1886, is the oldest black Pentecostal Church in the United States. Prior to this election he had served as secretary to the Board of Bishops, general second vice president, vice president. He was the founding president of the Virginia Diocese and served for 25 years as its president.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Annie S. Talley; two daughters, Beverly R. and Talitha Y.; a granddaughter, Jennifer L. Lee; three sisters, Mary T. Powell, Nellie T. Turner and Dorothy T. Draft; four brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

A wake for Bishop Talley will convene at Gospel Light UHCA, 2614 Marshall Ave., Newport News, Va., on Sunday at 5 p.m. and at Twine's Memorial UHCA, 1419 County St., Portsmouth, on Monday at 5 p.m. The service of triumph will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Tuesday, Feb. 27, 1996, at 11 a.m.
