As a volunteer handling memorial donations with one of the local charities in Hampton Roads, I would like to offer some information on making a memorial donation to a charity chosen by the family of the deceased when the obituary notice in the newspaper states in lieu of flowers, please donate to ------- charity.
1. Never give the check to the family. Family members have enough to deal with at this time. Send the check to the charity.
2. Please designate the name of the deceased. We have no way of knowing the name unless you instruct us.
3. Give the name or names of the members of the surviving family that you wish to be notified of your donation. Please include their address. We will notify them that a contribution has been made by you.
4. Don't fail to send your address so that you may be notified that your donation was received and greatly appreciated by the organization. This also tells you that proper acknowledgment has been made to the family of the deceased.
5. If the family requests one charity, but you prefer another, please try to comply with the bereaved family's wishes. They usually have a very good reason for making their choice, and your contribution will show them you care.
