Gina Forehand walked away with top honors in the 39th annual Tidewater Women's Bowling Association Tournament.
Forehand won the coveted Division 1 scratch all-events title, the singles crown and shared in the doubles championship.
Forehand, the area's No. 5 ranked bowler last year, posted a nine-game pinfall of 1,862 to top the all-events category in the two-weekend tournament. Fran Sansone, No. 1 ranked in five of the past six seasons, and Sharron Payton tied for runner-up honors with 1,825.
The handicap winner was Payton with 2,083. Robyn Woodruff was second with 2,029.
Forehand won the Division 1 singles crown with 690, edging Sharon Kunkle (684). The handicap winner was Kunkle with 729.
In doubles, Forehand paired with Leslie Livesay for the scratch title with a 1,239 pinfall. Livesay was scratch all-events champion last year.
The handicap doubles went to Payton and Annette Tripp with 1,368.
Team 118, captained by Sansone, was the scratch team winner with 2,335. The handicap champ was Team 20, captained by Patsy Shank, with 2,615.
In Division 2, Lydia Arata won scratch all-events with 1,631, a 10-pin edge over Virginia Langley. Sue Moore was the handicap victor with 2,067, edging Arata by a single pin.
Langley and Arata also were 1-2 in scratch singles. Langley had 556 and Arata shot 551. Moore, third in the scratch category, won handicap singles with 697. Arata again was one pin behind and Shirley Walton was four pins back.
June Ludford and Barbara O'Neal won scratch doubles in Division 2 with 1,022. Moore and Cindy Wade were handicap winners with 1,406.
Hot-to-Trot paced both the scratch and handicap team categories in Division 2. Captained by Pat Anderson, Hot-to-Trot had a scratch 1,984 and handicap total 2,587.
Sansone's 278 game and 725 series were the highest in Division 1. In Division 2, Langley led the way with a 247 game and Moore had best series of 645.
Winners will split up more than $11,000.
The 42nd annual Norfolk Bowling Association Championship continues to March 3.
After two weekends of action, here are the frontrunners:
Scratch teams - Columbia 300 (Thomas Brown, Reginald Jones, Reuben Turner Jr. and Warren Brooks) 2,666; Handicap teams - Columbia 300, 2,933; Scratch singles - Mike Campbell, 727; Handicap singles - Jim Talmadge, 779; Scratch doubles - Brett Williams and William Bjorgaard, 1,294; Handicap doubles - Dal Townsell and Steven Ewing, 1,611; Scratch all-events - Williams, 2,059; Handicap all-events - Eric Carey, 2,319.
Donald Sprawls and Ken Shick both had 279 games in the team event. Jones' 694 with the pace-setting team was the best series in team competition.
The Portsmouth City Women's Association Championship will be held at Franklin Bowling Center. Competition is scheduled March 9-10 and March 16-17 with shifts at 1 and 4 p.m.
Bowler of the Week honors go to 10-year-old Theus Aspiras. Aspiras rolled an adult-sized 277 game and went on to hit a 685 series in the Youth Scratch Doubles Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake.
The up-and-rising star had a 154 average in Bantam League play the past season.
Tenpin topics: Three more 300s were chalked up during the week, two at Pinboy's of Norfolk. Warren Hiteshew opened with a 12-striker and added games of 222 and 174 for 696 in the Industrial League. Ken Hansen subbed in the Sunday Nite Mixed/Just for Fun League and had 300, 226 and 258 for 784. Bobby Thompson fired a 300 in the Ball and Chain League at Indian River, going on to post a 782 series. Thompson had another 300 at the same center in February last season. . . . It was Jerome Jenkins, not Jerome Johnson, who had the earlier 300 in the Monday Nite Mixed League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . Dee Stowe had a triplicate 178 in the Mid-Atlantic Women's League. . . . Brenda Cupp also tossed a triplicate 157 in the Pioneer Mixed League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . John Phillips pocketed $1,875.75 for winning the Break the Bank at Pinboy's of Western Branch with his 222, 234 and 223 in the Tuesday Men's Commercial League. . . . Richard Boyd joined the Triplicate Club with three 167 games in the Military Doubles League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . One of the finest of the area control desk workers, Jo Ann Simonic, is retiring at Pinboy's of Norfolk. A steady 170-plus bowler, she can now concentrate on her own bowling game. . . . Congratulations to Mary Leland for joining the 700 Club with a 706 series in the Twilighters League at Indian River. . . . Another local league is a winner in the WIBC drawing. The Stargazers League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven won a fifth-place prize. It's the second year in a row the Stargazers League has grabbed an award. . . . Emmanuel Perry came up with a seven hit on his final pitch for a splendid 297 single in the Sunday Forehand Forehand ght Mixed League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. . . . In the Monday Night Mixed League at the same center, Sonny Drake tossed a 289 game in his 684 series and Lawrence Irvin Jr. had a 279 en route to a 708. . . . Bobby Wheeler whacked a 288 game in the Tuesday Scratch Trio League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . Monique Dill notched a 278 game in her 670 series in the Charles Peete League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. Sleepy Heads League at Indian River. . . . Mike Krell soared over the 700 mark again with 228, 224 and 257 for 709 in the Major/Senior League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. In the Junior League, Richie Dalrymple (137 average, 204 game), Jason Bess (150 average, 204 game) and Derrick Ertsgaard were 50 over average. . . . Nick Lewis had a 251 game in the Junior/Major/Senior loop at Pinboy's of Western Branch.
Duckpin data: A surprise going-away party was given Feb. 18 for Simp and Butch Warren, who are moving to North Carolina. Simp Warren is one of the pioneer duckpin bowlers in the area. Son Butch served a long stint as president of the Portsmouth Duckpin Bowlers Association, longer than any other president, and has worked at the control desk at Victory Lanes. The two were given a color television by the bowlers. . . . Alison Pugh, who averages 95 in the Monday Morning Mixed League, racked up a 142 game. . . . Wendell Johnson had the thrill of pitching his first 400 series with 402 in the Naval Shipyard League. Johnson averages 104. . . . Al Wilkins followed up a 192 game and 464 series in the Tuesday Major Trio League with a 453 in the Tidewater Pro League. . . . Shawn Meadow, who averages 112, pitched a 417 series in the Bowlarama Youth League. In the same league, Daniel Anderson, a 106-average kegler, hit a 146 game. . . . Six-year-old Rebecca Schumacher, a 73-average bowler, walloped a 103 game in the Victory Youth League. Adam Perez, 12, had a 160 game. Adam averages 96. Bryan Smith, who averages 90, registered a 151 game. . . Henry Kaufman celebrated the Big 50. . . . Lang's Fangs had a record scratch team game of 573 in the Industrial League and LOST the game. The Woodpickers had 576 with an 8-pin handicap, sparked by a 185 by Brian Aldridge. . . . The Virginia State Tournament gets under way Saturday, March 2. The four-weekend tourney at Victory Lanes is accepting walk-in entries, but bowlers should bring certification of average.
