RECOGNIZING A SPECIAL PROGRAM

ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by STEVE EARLEY

The Virginia Beach chapter of Very Special Arts Virginia, a

nonprofit volunteer group that uses the arts to help disabled adults

and children find creative expression, recently completed a banner

that will hang in the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in

Washington. Disabled high school students like Netala Forbes, left,

and Damon Martone, who attend classes in the West Wing of Princess

Anne High School, recently painted self-portraits and signed the

banner. Very Special Arts is an international program started in

1974 by Jean Kennedy Smith. Chapters worldwide will be sending

banners to the center.
