RUTH P. SMITH

Ruth P. Smith, 79, of the 2000 block of Benefit Road, a retired registered nurse, passed away Saturday Feb. 24, 1996, in Chesapeake.

Mrs. Smith was born in Roanoke, Va., and was the daughter of the late George T. and Mildred Cooper Stout. She was a graduate of Saint Vincent-DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Smith had been both a visiting and private duty registered nurse with Norfolk General Hospital for several years and had retired as secretary of the Nurse's Professional Registry. Mrs. Smith was a member of the American Nurse's Association and the Virginia Nurse's Association and had represented them both as a delegate.

Survivors include her husband, Ellis Clayton Smith Sr. of Chesapeake; her daughter, Nancy McCormick, also of Chesapeake; her three sons, Ellis Clayton Smith Jr. of Norfolk, George Smith of Hampton, and Gary Smith of Atlanta; her sister, Elizabeth Henderlite of Roanoke; two brothers, Louis Stout, also of Roanoke, and George Stout of Church Road, Va.; and four grandchildren, Justin and Brandon McCormick and Spencer and Andrew Smith.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Tom Mercer. Burial will follow in the Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at 200 Marion Drive, (NU)B, Chesapeake.
