Two Virginian-Pilot staff members won best-in-show awards Saturday night in the annual Virginia Press Association contest.
Best-in-show awards for writing, photography and artwork are selected from the first-place winners in all categories of those competitions.
Marie Joyce, the paper's health and medicine writer, was presented the Guy Friddell Award for Daily Writing for ``Life with Amy,'' an entry in the feature writing category. The judge wrote, ``This story is captivating. . . . From the start, the reader wants to know the end. The writer, telling this story, drives you to the completion.''
Lawrence Jackson, a staff photographer, won best-in-show for daily photography for ``The Witchduck Murders,'' an entry in the picture story or essay category. The judges wrote: ``This was an effective package. It captures the gritty feel of a murder investigation. It's real photojournalism. The reader feels like he is on the inside.''
The Pilot was also one of seven papers in the state to win sweepstakes awards for the highest award point total in their circulation categories. Competing among daily papers with circulations of more than 50,000, the Pilot had the highest point total in all three areas - writing, graphics and page makeup.
Two newspapers - The Martinsville Bulletin and The Roanoke Times - were chosen as winners of the VPA's 48th annual W.S. Copeland Awards for journalistic integrity and public service. The Bulletin was cited for a yearlong look at issues facing young people in the Martinsville community. The Times won for reporting on the impacts of residential and commercial growth and on social issues such as teen pregnancy and truancy.
In a separate contest, Kenneth D. Lyons of The Daily Press was named Virignia News Photographer of the Year at the Virginia News Photographers Association's annual photo competition.
Sixty-two photographers from newspapers from across the state submitted entries in 15 categories for the awards announced Friday night in Richmond.
