Lewis J. Rivers Sr., 66, of Archer, Fla., formerly of Mansfield, widower of Jean Bishop Rivers, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 1996, in Gainsville, Fla.
Lew was born July 27, 1929, in Keene, N.H., son of the late Lewis and Marion Hope Rivers and was a resident of Mansfield for 13 years before moving to Florida 14 years ago. Lew was employed by UCONN for 12 years as a Chef before his retirement in 1978. He was also an E.M.T. and a Constable in Mansfield. Lew was a Navy Veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Enterprise serving 22 years in the Navy. Lew was the past President of the Windham Whirlers.
He is survived by three sons, Lewis J. Rivers Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., John A. River of Angola, N.Y., and Kevin E. Rivers of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Jean M. Repik of S.C.; Deborah A. Miller of Hinsdale, N.Y., Diana J. Rivers of Willimantic, Conn., Janice L. Legere of Fla.; seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a brother and sister.
A graveside funeral service will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Coventry Funeral Home, 2665 Boston Turnpike, Route 44, in Coventry. Memorial contributions may be made in Lewis' name to the American Cancer Society, 29 Ivanhill St., Willimantic, Conn. 06226.
