John Lewis Basnight, age 69, of 15311 New Towne Haven Lane, died Monday, Feb. 26, 1996, in Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk.
He was a native of Edenton, N.C., and a retired heavy equipment operator from Local (NU)147, Operating Engineers, Norfolk. Mr. Basnight was a member of Benn's United Methodist Church and an honorary member of Carrollton Ruritan Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Gilliam Basnight; two nieces, Robin Basnight of Highland Park, Fla., Vicky Basnight Garrison of Virginia Beach; and a nephew, Charles Basnight of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Luke's Memorial Park with the Rev. Fred Breeden officiating. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Mamie G. Turner, 15352 New Town Haven Lane, Carrollton. The family suggest memorial contributions may be made to Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23431.
