With the deadline about a week away, only one Surry County resident had filed to run in one of three council elections slated for May 7 in the county's incorporated towns.
That candidate filed for Dendron, where every four years six council members and a mayor are elected. Both Claremont and Surry Courthouse elect five council members and a mayor every four years.
Not one candidate had filed in either of those races, County Registrar Lucille Epps said Monday.
To facilitate late filings, Epps said her office will be open on Tuesday, March 5, the final day, until 7 p.m. Otherwise, the office in the county municipal building is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Surry citizens can register to vote in the council and mayoral races through Monday, April 8. The registrar's office will be open on that day until 5 p.m. and on the preceding Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by CNB
