The irritated people who have written you lately in defense of the circus, remind me of a teacher I once had.
I thought she was a great teacher. She seemed like such a kind, caring person, until one night she came to class lamenting how little sleep she had gotten the night before. I asked her why she hadn't slept and she angrily replied that a bunch of stray cats were living under her house, and because of the bitter cold, they screamed and cried all night long.
In sadness and disgust, I walked away from my revered mentor, trying hard to fathom that the sound of animals freezing to death annoyed her.
