LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Scout's honor, your investment won't be lost

On Friday, Feb. 16, Boy Scout Troop 30, sponsored by the Bethlehem Ruritan Club, held its annual fund-raising barbecue. As we are all aware, Suffolk experienced yet another snow.

Notwithstanding the snow, we had a very good fund-raising event. We would like to thank not only the friends of Scouting who helped with this event, but more importantly, those people who purchased tickets. They are truly the ones who make this event a success.

We at Troop 30 would like to thank those who came to Bethlehem Christian Church to either pick up or eat in. However, through no fault of their own, some people who had purchased tickets were unable to get out and get a dinner.

We understand this and would like to redeem your ticket(s). Please mail them to Boy Scout Troop 30, 126 Roberts Court, Suffolk Va. 23434, and we will send you replacement tickets next February for our 1997 Bar-B-Que. To assure we get your name and address correct, please include a self-addressed envelope. Troop 30 will provide the postage.

It is support from the people of Suffolk and the surrounding areas that make it possible for Troop 30 to provide an opportunity for boys to take part in the wonderful adventure of Scouting. Once again, thank you on behalf of Troop 30.

Working together, we can cut crime rate

The time has come to ask ourselves if the rate of crime in our fair city has dropped to a record low.

If the answer is beyond our comprehension, then we need to take a real look in our respective areas. What we find will amaze us.

The answer is simple: It is at a record high. The dope dealers and thugs think they have the upper hand; and in most areas, they do, especially in the Suffolk District.

We should not have to live in fear of gunfire in our streets, nor should we have to have our homes broken into by the thugs in our neighborhoods. It is time for all of us to work together to rid our city of all of this, especially when we are working toward building a new courts complex that will be a tremendous asset for our city.

As a member of the Downtown Business Association, through the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 5 of Suffolk, and their representative, I want to see our beautiful city grow and have the possibility of attracting new businesses, so we can put Suffolk back on the road to beautification.

This city was unique at one time, and it can rise out of the ashes to claim its beauty once again. But it will take all of us working together in order to do it.

Let's rid our city of the stench of crime, and let's help and support our police department and other law enforcement departments to take back our city and our neighborhoods. Together we can make it happen. We only have to put forth the effort.
