INDIAN RIVER LEADS BOYS FIRST-TEAM PICKS OTHERS WERE DEEP CREEK, GREAT BRIDGE AND ATLANTIC SHORES.

Regular season champion Indian River led the voting for the All-City boys basketball team as selected by league coaches and The Virginian-Pilot.

The Braves, who finished the regular season at 21-3, 13-1 in the Southeastern District and second in South Hampton Roads, placed two players on the first team and one on the second. Indian River head coach Freddie Spellman also earned coach of the year honors.

Leading the vote getters was Indian River sophomore Jason Capel. Capel, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 21.2 points per game for the Braves, good for second among area Group AAA scoring leaders.

Joining Capel on the first team were teammate David Selby, a 6-1 junior forward who averaged 14.1 points per game; Deep Creek's Arnie Powell, a 6-6 junior forward (13.4 ppg), and Javon Artis, a 6-1 junior guard (13.4 ppg); Great Bridge's Steve Hargrow, a 5-9 junior guard who was eighth in area scoring with 17.3 points per game; and Atlantic Shores' Kenny Inge, a 6-7 senior center.
