Project engineer Joe Lassiter, right, takes questions from Hatteras
Islander Bonnie Williams, center, and Bill Barley during a tour of
the Fessenden Center, a multipurpose building in Buxton for the
residents of southern Hatteras Island. The 12,619-square-foot, $1.2
million Dare County-owned facility is scheduled to open by late
April. It will include a 3,000-square-foot meeting room, tennis
courts, a basketball court, an outdoor walkway and pier. The center
was named for Reginald A. Fessenden, ``the father of wireless
communications,'' who made the first wireless broadcast of musical
notes from an antenna near Buxton in 1902.
