A former exchange officer at the U.S. Coast Guard Support Center has been indicted by a federal grand jury in an embezzlement case.
Barbara Benton Lis, 44, of the 1100 block of Folley Road was charged this week with embezzling an unspecified amount of money from March 19, 1993, through November 1994.
The indictment states only that the amount of money involved is more than $100.
Lis, a civilian, has not been arrested, said a spokeswoman with the U.S. attorney's office in Raleigh.
Assistant U.S. District Attorney Yvonne Watford McKinney, who is handling the case, was out of town Thursday and was unavailable for comment.
The Coast Guard special agent who conducted the investigation said he could not comment on the case.
If convicted, Lis could receive a sentence of up to 10 years in a federal prison, $250,000 in fines and three years of supervised release.
A trial date has not been set. by CNB
