ODU PROF AMONG 11 HONORED BY STATE COUNCIL

William D. Stanley, the chairman of Old Dominion University's engineering technology department, was among 11 Virginia educators named outstanding faculty Friday by the State Council of Higher Education.

David L. Holmes, a professor of religion at the College of William and Mary, was also among the award winners. Stanley and Holmes have taught at their schools for more than 30 years each.

Stanley has been among the most active professors in ODU's distance-learning program, in which courses are beamed electronically to students in classrooms across the state. He has written more than a half-dozen textbooks and has won three ``most inspiring faculty'' awards from graduating seniors.

Holmes' specialty is the Episcopal Church and religion in Colonial America. He is associate editor of the journal Anglican and Episcopal History.

The professors were selected by a 14-member panel that included Council of Higher Education members, college officials and business leaders.

Each professor will receive a $5,000 prize at a banquet Monday night in Richmond. The keynote speakers will be two Virginia students recently named Rhodes Scholars: Samantha Salvia of ODU and Mark Embree of Virginia Tech. by CNB
