RARE ACHIEVEMENT FOR SAINTS FRESHMAN

Near the beginning of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools boys basketball season, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy freshman Warren Carroll said he wanted to make a good first impression on the league. He wanted to prove that a freshman could have an impact.

And he did.

The 6-foot-1 guard led the Saints, who finished 19-9 and second in the TCIS, with 17.1 points per game. He also made 44 percent of his shots from the floor (51 percent from inside 3-point range, 29 from outside the arc) and shot 70 percent from the foul line. TCIS coaches noticed Carroll, naming him to the all-conference first team last week.

``He was very impressive,'' said Norfolk Academy coach Dave Trickler. ``He was their offensive ringleader. He overcame the idea of being a freshman, and that's a credit to him to be able to assert himself around a team of older players.''

Trickler and Nansemond-Suffolk coach Rick Van Orden said they cannot remember a freshman being named to the all-conference first team.

``I can't think of any in the league and I've been around it for 18 years,'' Van Orden said. ``He's definitely the best freshman I've ever coached.

``We relied on him for so much scoring and ballhandling. He accepted it, and did it. It was just a tremendous effort.''

Kinte Smith (Cape Henry), Bryan Duquette (Norfolk Academy), Heath Burris (Greenbrier Christian) and Scott Mackie (Peninsula Catholic) joined Carroll on the first team.

Duquette led the Bulldogs, the TCIS regular season and tournament champions, with 18.8 points and grabbed 7.7 rebounds, while handing out 3.9 assists per game and shooting 54 percent from the floor. Norfolk Academy played Thursday in a state semifinal.

Burris led the TCIS in scoring with nearly 25 per game, while Smith was second in league scoring with nearly 23.

Juraj Podvorac (Norfolk Academy), Chad Dunlow (Greenbrier Christian), Chris DiNunzio (Cape Henry), Kevin Ryan (Norfolk Christian) and Byron Whitehead (Catholic) were named to the second team, while Ryan Welsh (Norfolk Collegiate), Jesse Wilburn (Walsingham) John Dragseth (N-SA), Evan Lucas (Hampton Roads) Campbell Delk (Hampton Roads) and Frankie Cabrero (Cape Henry) earned honorable mention.
