The Portsmouth Sports Club's Golden Anniversary Jamboree, scheduled on Wednesday night, is expected to draw a capacity crowd to the Holiday Inn-Portside banquet room.
Some tickets are still available and can be purchased Monday or Tuesday from ticket chairman Walter Jernigan (399-6525). No tickets will be sold at the door.
The tickets are $40. The 7 p.m. program will follow a social hour.
Two of the club's three founders, Pete Glazer and Herb Simpson, will be among those present. The other founder, Meyer Jacobson, is deceased.
Donnie Shell, director of player relations for the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League, will be the featured speaker.
Larry Piland, long affiliated with youth baseball in the Churchland area, will be honored as Sports Person of the Year.
Carl Rhodes, who recently stepped down as head baseball coach at Churchland High School, will receive the Abe Goldblatt Memorial High School Coach of the Year Award.
Also to be honored are Norfolk State's James Roe and Old Dominion's Samantha Salvia as the outstanding state college athletes, Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer as college coach of the year, and a club member who will be recognized as the member of the year.
Three high school athletes, Wilson's Christine Farrell, Norcom's Kevin Coles and Western Branch's Katie MacPhail, will receive college scholarship awards.
A celebrity luncheon, open only to the honorees and Sports Club members, will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and two special awards will be presented to a pair from Portsmouth.
Norfolk State quarterback Aaron Sparrow will be honored for his school record-setting passing achievements and Indian River High School football coach Bob Parker will be recognized for his team's winning the Division 6 state championship.
A press conference also is scheduled Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
