Churchland's Nicole Council, along with her head coach Duke Conrad, took top honors in Southeastern District's girls basketball for 1995-96.
Council, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, was the leading vote getter on the all-star team chosen by coaches. Conrad, whose team moves to the Eastern District next season, was honored by his colleagues as coach of the year.
Council led the Truckers to a 20-3 overall record and the regular season crown with a 14-1 finish. She was also the area's fourth best scorer with 17.5 points per game.
Joining Council on the first team were Deep Creek's Anecia Brathwaite; Western Branch's Brandi Woodard; and Great Bridge's LaShelle Griffin and Kalisha Brown.
Brathwaite, a junior guard, led the Hornets with 14.6 points per game and is the only other first-team pick who ranks among Group AAA scoring leaders. Braithwaite's 307 points in 21 games is the area's ninth best average.
Woodard, who moves up to the first team after earning second team honors last season, helped spark the Bruins to a buzzer-beating tournament title over Churchland and a region berth. Woodard averaged 9.9 points per game for Western Branch.
Griffin, who along with Council is a repeat first-team selection, led the Wildcats with 12.9 points per game and Brown chipped in 10.5.
The second team included Churchland's Kim Elliott and Shelly Singleton, Norcom's Felisha Brown, Oscar Smith's Krystal Johnson and Western Branch's Millette Green. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo
