THROUGH THE YEARS: BLOSSOM HILL SCHOOL

ILLUSTRATION: Photo courtesy of Edgar T. Brown

Blossom Hill School was the first school built in Princess Anne

County in 1846 under the Virginia Free School Act. The

unpretentious, unpainted two-room school served students into the

20th century, until 1908 when a more modern school, serving

elementary and secondary pupils, was built in the village of Creeds.

That eight-classroom school served until 1939 when the new Creeds

High School was built by the W.P.A. program. Blossom Hill stood

within 100 yards of the current Creeds Elementary School. The land

was originally part of the Michael Fentress tract, which came into

the family from a land grant from King Charles II of England in

1672. It was still in the Fentress family in 1939. Blossom Hill got

its name from the flowers that grew everywhere in the area.
