Four School Board seats are up for election on May 7. Two candidates have filed with the Voter Registrar's Office, but it's unclear how many more will complete the paperwork and collect the necessary signatures by 7 p.m. Tuesday, the filing deadline.
Some are purposely mum.
``I'm not revealing my plans at this time,'' said Rev. Larry Brayboy, a current board member who's term will be ending. ``I think I'll just remain coy like everybody else.''
James Wheaton, an attorney who sits on the board, said he'll probably wait until Tuesday to file.
Allen H. Goode Jr., a former School Board member and retired Army Reserves Major from the Indian River area, has thrown in his hat. Patricia P. Willis, a former special assistant United States attorney who is now a homemaker, filed her papers last week.
``I feel that with an education and law degree, and being a mother, I have a lot to bring to the board,'' Willis said.
``I want to be a part of the system, making it the best school system it can be for my children and the best school system in the state.''
The terms of four board members expire this year: Chairman Maury B. Brickhouse and Mary Korving, who have decided not to run, and those of Brayboy and Wheaton.
This is the city's second School Board election, the first was held last December when five seats were filled. Those seats will be up for election in 1998.
Those elected this May will serve four-year terms.
