Police say they believe a woman whose car was ripped in half after it hit a utility pole had fallen asleep at the wheel.
Crystal E. Pearson, 24, of the 5800 block of East Hastings Arch, was listed in stable condition Saturday night in the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police said the accident occurred at 7:24 a.m. in the 5400 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard near Scores Plaza.
Mike Carey, a police spokesman, said the 1993 Ford Escort was westbound on the boulevard when it went out of control, struck a curb, spun sideways and hit the pole.
There was no evidence that alcohol or excessive speed were involved. No charges were lodged against Pearson, who suffered multiple injuries.
