WILLIAM E. KIRKLEY

William Elbert ``Kirk'' Kirkley, 86, of the 7300 block of Glenroie Ave., died Sunday, March 3, 1996, in his residence.

Mr. Kirkley was a native of Cheraw, S.C., and a son of the late Willie Elmore and Iola Kelly Kirkley. He was educated in the Cheraw Public Schools and the Institute of Business and Accounting in Atlanta, Ga.

He was manager of the Bennetsville, S.C., Postal Telegraph Office, comptroller for Eastern Airlines, Atlanta, and office manager for Libby, McNeill and Libby in Atlanta.

Mr. Kirkley served in World War II in the U.S. Navy as a specialist 1st in personnel as an IBM operator. In 1946, he came to Norfolk as the Libby office manager, where he retired after 34 years. For 10 years he was employed in the Treasury Department, Norfolk International Terminals.

He was a member of the Exchange Club of Norfolk, American Legion Post (NU)35, the Norfolk and Virginia Beach Executives Club, the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and Woodmen of the World.

Mr. Kirkley was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon and Sunday School treasurer. For 19 years he was a member of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sarah Comer Kirkley; two daughters, Joan K. Stone and her husband, Robert, of Newark, Del., and Nancy K. King and her husband, Robert, of Norfolk; a sister, Nancy Caudill of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren, David Kirkley Stone of Golden, Colo., Jennifer Marie Stone of Newark, Del., and Elizabeth Kelly King, Robert Marvin King III and Ryan Archer King, all of Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cox Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. John R. Monroe. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zuni Presbyterian Center, P.O. Box 54, Zuni, Va. 23898, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
